Rotation Angles — 90, 180, and 270 Degrees

Flip vs Mirror — What's the Difference

Flipping and mirroring are related but distinct operations:

Flip vertical (also called "flip upside down"): Reverses the image top-to-bottom. The bottom row of pixels becomes the top row. Useful for creating reflections or correcting images that were captured upside down.

Flip horizontal (also called "mirror"): Reverses the image left-to-right. The left column of pixels becomes the right column. This is the operation that creates a mirror-image effect — text becomes backwards, a person facing left now faces right.

Both operations are lossless, just like 90-degree rotations. No resampling occurs because every pixel maps directly to a new position without interpolation.

Common uses for flipping:

  • Mirror selfies: Some cameras flip selfies automatically; mirroring restores the original orientation
  • Text correction: Documents photographed through a mirror or glass need horizontal flipping
  • Design symmetry: Creating symmetric compositions by duplicating and mirroring one half
  • Reflection effects: Flipping an image vertically and placing it below the original creates a water-reflection effect
