QR Code Payments: How to Accept Payments via QR

A QR code for payment lets customers pay by scanning a code with their phone camera — no card reader, no app download, no physical contact. For small businesses, market vendors, and service providers, QR payments are one of the lowest-cost ways to accept money digitally.

This guide explains how QR code payments work, which platforms support them, what to watch out for security-wise, and how to set up payments for your business.

How QR Code Payments Work

There are two models for QR code payments, and understanding the difference matters.

Merchant-Presented QR Codes

The business displays a QR code — on a counter stand, receipt, or screen. The customer scans it, enters the payment amount (or it's pre-filled), and confirms the transaction. This is the model used by PayPal, Venmo, and most point-of-sale systems.

The code can be static (same code every time, customer enters the amount) or dynamic (unique per transaction with the amount embedded). Dynamic codes are more secure because they can't be reused.

Customer-Presented QR Codes

The customer's payment app generates a QR code on their phone screen. The merchant scans it with their point-of-sale system to initiate the payment. This model is common in retail stores with integrated POS systems but less practical for small businesses without dedicated hardware.

For most small businesses, merchant-presented static codes are the simplest starting point. You can generate a code linking to your payment page with our QR code generator.

Payment Platforms That Support QR Codes

PayPal

PayPal offers QR code payments through its business accounts. You generate a QR code in the PayPal app, display it at your counter or table, and customers scan to pay from their PayPal balance or linked card. Funds settle into your PayPal account, and you can transfer to your bank.

PayPal charges standard transaction fees but requires no monthly subscription for basic QR payments.

Square

Square's POS app includes a QR code payment option. You can generate a code for a specific amount or a generic code for open-amount payments. Customers scan and pay with a card through Square's checkout. Square deposits funds to your linked bank account on its standard schedule.

Stripe

Stripe supports QR code payments through Stripe Terminal and via payment links. You create a payment link for a product or invoice, generate a QR code pointing to that link, and customers complete checkout on Stripe's hosted page. This works well for invoices and online-to-offline sales.

Cash App and Venmo

For very small businesses and casual sellers, Cash App and Venmo offer QR codes tied to your account. Customers scan and send money instantly. These platforms have lower fees but fewer business features — no inventory tracking, no receipts, limited dispute protection.

Security Considerations

Static vs. Dynamic Codes

Static QR codes never change. If someone replaces your static code with their own — by printing a sticker over your counter display — payments redirect to the attacker's account. This is called QR code swapping and it has happened at real businesses.

Dynamic codes, which generate a fresh QR code per transaction, eliminate this risk. If your platform supports dynamic codes, use them for in-person payments.

Verifying the Destination

Always verify that your QR code links to your actual payment page, not a lookalike. Phishing QR codes direct customers to fake payment pages that capture card details. Use official platform tools to generate codes, and test the scan flow yourself before going live.

Amount Confirmation

With static codes, the customer enters the amount. That means they could underpay by mistake — or on purpose. For fixed-price transactions, use dynamic codes with pre-filled amounts or clearly post the price next to the code.

Setting Up QR Payments for Your Business

Step 1: Choose a Platform

Pick a payment processor that fits your business model. For market stalls and casual sales, Cash App or Venmo may suffice. For businesses with regular volume, PayPal, Square, or Stripe offer better reporting and dispute protection.

Step 2: Generate Your QR Code

Within your chosen platform, generate the payment QR code. Alternatively, create a QR code linking to your payment URL using our QR code generator. For URL linking tips, see our URL QR code guide.

Step 3: Display the Code

Print the code on a counter stand, table tent, or laminated card. Follow sizing rules:

  • Minimum 2 x 2 inches for counter display
  • High contrast on matte material
  • Clear call to action: "Scan to pay"

Step 4: Test the Full Flow

Scan the code yourself, complete a test transaction, and confirm the funds arrive in your account. Test with both iOS and Android devices.

QR Payments vs. NFC (Tap to Pay)

QR payments and NFC (contactless tap) serve similar purposes but differ in setup cost:

Feature QR Code Payments NFC / Tap to Pay
Hardware needed None (printed code) NFC reader or compatible phone
Customer setup Phone camera only Apple Pay / Google Wallet
Transaction speed Slower (scan + confirm) Faster (tap + done)
Cost to start Near zero Reader or compatible device
Best for Small vendors, invoices High-volume retail

QR payments win on cost and simplicity. NFC wins on speed and customer experience at scale. Many businesses use both.

Best Practices

Use dynamic codes when possible. They're more secure and support pre-filled amounts.

Check your account daily. QR payments are fast, but you should reconcile transactions against your records to catch any issues early.

Have a backup payment method. If your QR code platform has an outage, you need a fallback — cash, card, or another processor.

Post clear pricing. With static codes where customers enter the amount, visible pricing reduces errors and disputes.

Getting Started

QR code payments are the fastest way for a small business to start accepting digital payments without buying hardware. Generate your payment QR code with our QR code generator, review the URL QR code guide for destination best practices, and test the full payment flow before going live.

Start simple, verify the money arrives, and scale from there. The barrier to entry is low — and for most businesses, that's exactly the point.
